Turn off the water at the main shut-off valve
Usually where the water line comes into the house: a basement, crawl space, utility room or under the kitchen sink. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
Switch off electrics near the water
If water is near outlets, lights or appliances, turn those circuits off at the breaker panel, but only if you can reach it without standing in water.
Open the faucets to drain the pipes
Open the cold faucets on the lowest floor to take pressure off the system and drain what’s left.
Smell gas? Get out first
Leave the building, don’t switch anything on or off, and call the gas company’s emergency line from outside. Then call us.
